Honest reporting that's unafraid to say what's politically incorrect and push back against legacy media narratives, garnished by brilliant opinion pieces from genuine intellectuals.
You became my hero when I first read your piece about leaving the New York Times. I thought, “Now here’s someone I’m going to keep track of.” (I was never a reader of the NYTimes) Lo and behold, along comes tfp! It’s the first thing I read in the morning, which is a big help in keeping my seatbelt on in the midst of all the maniacal madness around us. There are several gifts of tfp subscriptions on my list this Christmas. Blessings to you, Nellie and all who are doing the work at tfp!
Bari you are such a bright light, growing ever brighter in this darkening world! Thank you for not hiding it under a bushel basket after your departure from the NYCrimes....
Another place you've been quoted recently Bari was at church last Sunday during the priest's sermon. He then went on to discuss DEI and if diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental values, meaning they are always and in every case a good thing. (Spoiler alert; they're not.) At the conclusion of his homily, the congregation applauded. This never happens. It isn't done. Thought you'd be amused to know this.
Bari was once the perfect example of he woke Left - living in the belly of the beast working and writing for the truly detestable New York Times. And now look what she's created. A bastion of rationality, truth and free speech. How do we create more Bari's?
Lot of guts to leave the safety & security of a regular job & paycheck.
Going forward, I don't care how much I may disagree with her....she has forever earned my respect leaving (to borrow a phrase from Mike Royko) the paper that no self respecting fish would allow itself to be wrapped in.
There's a long list of principled, non-ideological people who got cancelled over the last few years for disagreeing with progressive rhetoric, but who regrouped, reinvented themselves, and prevailed. Not coincidentally, many of them are here on Substack, where they report on their ongoing work. Off the top of my head and based solely on my own interests, I think of Colin Wright, Meghan Murphy, Kara Dansky, and Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein.
But it's true that Bari is unique in her rare combination of integrity, talent, brains, vision and ambition.
Maybe the answer to your question is to continue to support Substack. When I tell people about it I'm shocked at how many of them have never even heard of it.
I recommend Substack and subscription journalism often in general conversation. Like yourself, I'm amazed at the number of people who hold the same concerns about the Republic's survival yet have never heard of Substack.
As a thought: My experience has been that something like 5% of people in any given organization actually do the work that holds the organization together. A combined active leadership/following of maybe five good subscription journalists that totaled five million people could possibly change the national dialogue. And building a new truth/fact based national dialogue is what subscription journalism is about.
That’s a good point. It’s gratifying to know that Bari Weiss’s newspaper alone has made significant inroads into mainstream media, as she reports here.
Been a subscriber since Common Sense. I am a centrist, always willing to look at various sides of an issue. The Free Press does this, and is not afraid to intelligently take on tough subjects that the legacy press either won't touch, or will only report one side of. (And in legacy press, I include both 'left' and 'right' outlets.) Bari, you have every right to toot your own horn a bit here. I regularly forward articles and recommend TFP to others. Happy Thanksgiving to the Free Press crew.
I am so thankful for you, Bari Weiss! I’ve been a loyal supporter/subscriber since you launched Common Sense! I trust & depend on you, Bari, to keep us informed, while providing a platform where we may come together to learn, agree or agree to disagree WITHOUT fear of ridicule, slander or being cancelled!
I have (and will) gladly spread the word & encourage my “tribe” to join The Free Press!
God Bless you & your family, and God Bless America!
The Free Press has made a difference in my life……for the better! I am Canadian and I do not have a national news option, similar to the Free Press in approach, that I can read everyday. I read the Globe and Mail for many years and while we still subscribe ( because my husband is a loyal reader) I no longer expect to find objective, truthful reporting there. I began reading the Free Press about a year ago and after a few months I subscribed. I appreciate the high quality of journalism at your outlet. Reading T G I F is a highlight of my week…..hilarious! Douglas Murray’s Sunday article about poetry and poets is also amazing. I am delighted that Free Press articles and media are being shared around the world and that your outlet is being recognized for the excellent work it produces. I am very grateful to the Free Press for enriching my life. Happy
( American) Thanksgiving to everyone at the Free Press….. and your subscribers!
One of the best decisions I made becoming a subscriber to The Free Press. I stopped watching local and national news years ago due to the lack of quality and honesty. Now I look forward to my daily dose of The Free Press to keep me informed and thought provoking. Look forward to another year.
Me too, I gave up on legacy media a long time ago. They cannot be trusted. That is why I love the Free Press. I may not always agree, but I always trust it.
I’m grateful that you left the New York Times. I don’t always agree with you but I always trust you. The Times lost my trust years ago. And your reporting on the war is second to none. Thank you.
I agree with your feelings about the NYT but still subscribe-- love Tom Friedman and Brett Stephen’s, among others. Also read WAPO- and WSJ but no one as good as Bari!
I'll pay full price because every penny counts when supporting a truly free press.
So true. I'm going to have to send a $40 donation.

Grateful for Bari and Nellie.

I have sent my Catholic friends The Free Press-- they love it.
That's nice! We have to spread the sanity.
Can we extend our subscription at the Black Friday price?
Oooo. That's a great thought
Stay humble. And don’t let TFP be infiltrated.

First LOL of the day! Thank you!
Sweet.

Add Jodi Shaw
Add Matt Taibbi and Public by Michael Shellenberger
Was Matt cancelled?
You bet. What a remarkable and exemplary woman. Along those lines, I also should have mentioned Eli Steele.
It’s been uplifting to watch this grow from my little corner of the continent. Very happy and grateful to give you my support.

Too true Sue (that sounds like a song!). Especially that it is the legacy press both left AND right. They are equally untrustworthy.
Me, too!

So proud of what you guys have built! Glad to have been a member from the start. Keep up the great work!
